A trip to Laurens, South Carolina, is incomplete without a visit to historic downtown Laurens. Dating to the mid-1700s, the city of Laurens grew out of the convergence of five roads and eventually became what we know today as the Public Square which for many years served as the center of commercial, social and religious life in the area. In 1980 the Public Square was added to the National Register of Historic Places for its preponderance of 19th and 20th century buildings. Even today, the intimately-sized Laurens County Courthouse graces the Public Square and is the focal point of public life in the city. Laurens County was formed in 1785 and has a rich history that is deeply rooted in the American Revolution. The county hosted more officially recognized battles in the War of Independence than did half of the original colonies. For example, the Battle of Musgrove Mill was the first time during the American Revolution that British soldiers were defeated by the Colonial militia in an officially recognized battle.
